Milnathort

Milnathort is a small village in the Perth & Kinross region of central Scotland.

The smaller neighbour of nearby Kinross, Milnathort has a small population of roughly 1000 people. It is situated amidst picturesque countryside at the foot of the Ochil Hills, and near the north shore of Loch Leven. Recently, it has become easily accessible due to the development of the M90 motorway.

Amenities

Milnathort's amenities are typical of a small Scottish town. It is home to a nine hole golf course, a large park area, miles of a countryside bike path, a primary school, a range of traditional pubs and cafés and a shop which sells renowned ice cream. Milnathort also benefits from the nearby amenities of Kinross such as a leisure centre, a doctor's surgery and the Loch Leven Community Campus.

History

For a small town, Milnathort has a rich history. Settlement in the area can be dated as far back as 2000BC, with two Neolithic standing stones being nearby where human remains were found and dated. Additionally, the remains of Burleigh Castle can still be seen just outside of the town, which is a 15th century castle built for the Balfours of Burleigh to rule over what was then a market town. There is another nearby medieval castle on an island on Loch Leven, the infamous Loch Leven Castle. This castle is known to have been visited by Robert the Bruce in 1313 and 1323, but is perhaps most famous for the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1567.

Flooding

On 13 December 2006 heavy rainfall caused the Back Burn, which runs through the centre of Milnathort, to burst its banks. This led to flooding, and some residents were temporarily evacuated from their homes.^[1]
