Oli Ahad is a Bangladeshi politician and language activist of the Language Movement.

Early life

Ahad was born at the Islampur village of Brahmanbaria. In 1944 he passed matriculation from Daudkandi Government Aided High School. During the election for referendum of Pakistan, Ahad got involved with politics and campaigned in various places like Tripura, Bogra and was arrested number of times. He has a daughter who is a Barrister-at-Law.

Involvement in Language Movement

He met with Khawaja Nazimuddin to discuss about language proposal on January 8, 1948. Later that year he became a member of the committee that organised a Hartal on March 12, on demanding Bangla as the state language. Prior to that he was also nominated as a member of the Muslim Chhatra League. While picketing in front of the Secretariat, he was attacked and arrested along with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Khaleque Nawaz Khan and Shamsul Haque by the police.

In 1949, Ahad along with three other students were expelled from the University. Ahad was present at the historical meeting that took place at the Amtala of Dhaka University on February 21, 1952. Later that day he organized the agitated students. The next day he led a rally and called for nationwide Hartal.

Legacy

To show nation's respect to Ahad, with effect from 27 February 2007, Dhaka City Corporation has renamed Dhanmondi Road No.4 after him.

Other activities

Ahad also served as the editor of the weekly Ittehad. He was also the chairman of a political party named Democratic League.[1]
