"Our Day Will Come" is a popular song composed by Bob Hilliard and Mort Garson which was a #1 hit in 1963 for Ruby & The Romantics.

Ruby & the Romantics

The song's composers were hoping to place "Our Day Will Come" with an established easy listening act and only agreed to let the new R&B group Ruby & the Romantics record the song after Kapp Records A&R director Al Stanton promised that if the Ruby & the Romantics' single failed Kapp would record the song with Jack Jones. Stanton cut two versions of "Our Day Will Come" with Ruby & the Romantics, one with a mid-tempo arrangement and the other in a bossa nova style; the latter version, featuring a classic Hammond organ solo, was selected for release as a single in December 1962 to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March. A #1 R&B hit, "Our Day Will Come" was also a chart item in Australia (#11) and the UK (#38).^[1]

Other versions

Composers Mort Garson and Bob Hilliard were soon granted their wish for "Our Day Will Come" to be recorded by an easy listening star as the Julie London May 1963 album release The End of the World included "Our Day Will Come" as did the September 1963 Patti Page album release Say Wonderful Things. Mort Garson himself arranged Doris Day's 1965 version of "Our Day Will Come" featured on the album Latin for Lovers.

A version of "Our Day Will Come" will be released on Amy Winehouse new album Lioness: Hidden Treasures, it will be released as a single on December 5, 2011.

1960s' recording acts frequently covered "Our Day Will Come" as an album track, as per Fontella Bass, Jerry Butler and Betty Everett, Classics IV, Bobby Darin, the Earls, Billy Fury, Brenda Lee, Lennon Sisters, the Lettermen, Trini Lopez, Chris Montez, Cliff Richard, Bobby Rydell, Dee Dee Sharp, Spiral Starecase, the Supremes, the Vibrations, We Five and Nancy Wilson.

A version of "Our Day Will Come" was recorded in 1965 by the Supremes for the album There's a Place for Us which was to go unreleased until 2004; Mary Wilson is given a rare lead vocal on the track.

Cher included "Our Day Will Come" on her February 1966 album release The Sonny Side of Chér ; serving as the B-side of the hit "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", Cher's "Our Day Will Come" was issued as an A-side single in November 1972 following its inclusion on a United Artists compilation disc entitled Cher but the single did not chart.

Julie Rogers' 1965 UK hit "Like a Child" utilized "Our Day Will Come" as its B-side. A non-charting UK single release for Sharon Tandy in 1967, "Our Day Will Come" was also featured on albums by Billy Fury, the Honeycombs and Cliff Richard.

Later versions of "Our Day Will Come" include those by Isaac Hayes (...To Be Continued/1970), Bobby Vinton (Sealed with a Kiss/1972), the Carpenters (Now & Then/1973), Carl Carlton (Everlasting Love/1974), Esther Phillips (Here's Esther Are You Ready/1979) and Dionne Warwick (Heartbreaker/1982). Frankie Valli remade "Our Day Will Come" in rock-disco style as the title cut for his November 1975 album release from which it was issued as a single to reach #11; as with Valli's precedent hit "Swearin' to God" his "Our Day Will Come" features a vocal solo by Patti Austin.

k.d. lang recorded "Our Day Will Come" for the soundtrack of the 1989 film Shag.

Christina Aguilera recorded "Our Day Will Come" as a demo in 1996; the track was included on the 2001 album release Just Be Free.

Instrumental versions of "Our Day Will Come" have been recorded by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Willie Bobo, Jimmy Castor, Percy Faith, Buddy Merrill, Ronald Muldrow, Sonny Stitt and Cal Tjader.

The song was covered by English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. It is the first single from her posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures.^[5] The song was originally recorded for her first studio album, Frank but was shelved and is the first solo single to be released from Winehouse since Love Is A Losing Game in 2007. It received its first airplay on The Chris Moyles Show at 8:00 AM GMT on 3 November 2011.

Music video

The video is a montage of Winehouse throughout her career with clips from music videos, live peformances and press coverage. It was sent to UK music channels on 21 November. Following the release of the video Amys father tweeted "I just almost watched Amy's 'Our Day Will Come' video. She is so lovely."

Reception

The song is a cover of Ruby and the Romantics' 1963 single, recorded in 2002 and included on the posthumous release 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures'. Producer Salaam Reimi - who had worked with the 'Rehab' singer on her albums, 'Frank' and 'Back to Black', as well as on the posthumous compilation - says it will serve as a poignant reminder of the star's talent.
