Mooney Mooney is a suburb of the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, located on the north bank of the Hawkesbury River 48 kilometres (30 mi) north of Sydney. It is part of the City of Gosford local government area.

Profile

Mooney Mooney is located at the end of a peninsula extending southwards into the Hawkesbury River estuary and includes two islands. It formerly included Cheero Point, which was separately gazetted on 21 March 2003.[2][3] Mooney Mooney is the point at which the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and Pacific Highway cross from the Central Coast into Sydney's metropolitan area at Brooklyn in the Hornsby Shire.

Land use is mixed, with a small residential area east of the Pacific Highway which unlike many surrounding areas is serviced by sealed roads, electricity, telephone and reticulated water supply, and is characterised by hilly topography with slopes ranging from moderate to very steep [1] Offshore to the west, linked by road, is the former Peat Island hospital operated by the Department of Community Services. Oyster farms and related depuration depots are located in the suburb's south.

The 1.93-hectare (4.77-acre) Deerubbun Reserve adjoining the freeway at the suburb's southwest has been developed for public access to the Hawkesbury River and includes a boat ramp, parking area, picnic tables and public amenities.[4] The 36.4-hectare (89.9-acre) Spectacle Island is an offshore nature reserve managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
