Mongala Province

Location of Mongala province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Mongala is one of 25 new provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo specified in the country's 2005 Constitution (effective 18 February 2006), under Article 2.^[1] It was to be created from country's the existing 10 provinces within 36 months (18 February 2009), according to Article 226.^[2] As of October 2010, this had not taken place.^[3]

From 1963–1966, it was a province known as Moyen-Congo, but it was reintegrated into Équateur province under Mobutu; it was only re-recognized as a province after the approvement of the 2006 Constitution, along with fourteen other provinces which were then approved.

It is located at the northwest of the country on the Congo river, and borders Tshopo, Bas-Uele, Nord-Ubangi, Sud-Ubangi, Équateur and Tshuapa.

The capital of Mongala province is the town of Lisala.^[4]
