At various points throughout history one Monarch has reigned over more than one separate kingdom. These situations are commonly known as
personal union s.* Between
925 and1035 theKingdom of Aragon shared a monarchy with theKingdom of Navarre .
* The Kingdoms of León and Castile were united three times under the same monarch, first between1037 and1065 , again from1072 to1157 , and finally between1230 and sometime in the 16th Century.
* Between1065 and1072 Portugal and Galicia were united under a common monarch.
* Between1072 and1095 León, Castile, Portugal and Galicia were united under a common monarch, whereafter Portugal separated under a different dynasty, and the others were absorbed bySpain .
* TheKalmar Union was a period between1397 and1536 in whichDenmark ,Norway andSweden shared the same monarch as three independent countries.Norway andDenmark continued to share a monarchy from1536 to1814 . Norway was then united under a common monarchy with Sweden from1814 to1905 .
* From1490 to c.1740 Bohemia andHungary (themselves part of theHoly Roman Empire ) shared a monarchy. This relationship expanded with the addition ofGermany in c.1560 , and brieflyNaples andSardinia in1707 , andSicily in1714 to their departure in1735 ,1720 and1734 , respectively. After 1734 Hungary and Bohemia continued in their personal union relationship until Germany rejoined in1790 . The Empire of Austria replaced Germany in1804 . The three countries remained in this situation until the union was ended in the aftermath ofWorld War I , in1918 . TheAustro-Hungarian Empire itself was a union of theAustrian Empire and theKingdom of Hungary between1867 and1918 .
* From1541 ,King Henry VIII of England was declared King ofIreland , after being excommunicated by the pope and losing the title oflord of Ireland .England and Ireland were joined in a personal union until1603 , when theJames VI of Scotland became king of England and Ireland. All three crowns remained in personal union until1707 when England and Scotland were united by theAct of Union 1707 to become theUnited Kingdom of Great Britain . The two crowns remained under personal union until theAct of Union 1801 when the kingdoms became theUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . This union lasted until Irish Independence in1921 when with the departure of the 26 southern counties of Ireland, the U.K. officially became theUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .
* From1580 to1640 ,Portugal was under a united monarchy withSpain .
* Between1867 and1890 Luxembourg and theNetherlands shared the same monarch.
* TheCommonwealth realm s are a group of independent nations who share the same monarch. This situation began when thedominion s of theBritish Empire were granted equal status with theUnited Kingdom through the Statute of Westminster in1931 . Since that time the number of Commonwealth realms has fluctuated as some former colonies gained independence and became realms, while others became republics. Currently there are sixteen Commonwealth realms:Antigua and Barbuda ,Australia ,The Bahamas ,Barbados ,Belize ,Canada ,Grenada ,Jamaica ,New Zealand ,Papua New Guinea ,Saint Kitts ,Saint Lucia ,Saint Vincent and the Grenadines ,Solomon Islands ,Tuvalu ,United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .
