London College of Fashion (LCF) is a constituent college of the University of the Arts London, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, short courses and business-training in fashion, make-up, beauty-therapy and lifestyle industries. It is the only college in Britain to specialise in fashion education, research and consultancy.

History

The college was originally founded by the former London County Council in 1906 as the Shoreditch Technical Institute Girls School and the Bartlett St and Clapham Trade School, which were opened to train young girls in the art of dressmaking, millinery, embroidery and hairdressing. The London County Council was later abolished and replaced with the Inner London Education Authority until 1986. The two institutions later amalgamated to form one college for the garment trades: London College of Fashion. Cordwainers College is now an integral school of the London College of Fashion. Formerly Cordwainers' Technical College, it was a vocational college for the footwear and leather trades. The former head of college, Sandra Holtby, was awarded the OBE in the 2006 New Year's Honours. The current head of college is Dr Frances Corner.

The main college building at John Prince's Street is situated next to Oxford Street, just north of Oxford Circus which is primarily administrative aside from the Rootstein Hopkins Space, which is used to house various fashion shows and other fashion events. Davies Street site was recently obtained by the council and demolished to make way for the Olympics crossrail. LCF now have a new site based at 272 High Holborn where freshers week is hosted along with many other student and industry based events. The site at Lime Grove in west London houses specialist facilities for photography, knitwear, embroidery and pattern cutting. There are three other sites situated in east London on Mare Street, Curtain Road (Old Street) and Golden Lane (Old Street) for cordwainers footwear and accessories.

Affiliations

The London College of Fashion is a constituent college of the University of the Arts London, with Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication and Wimbledon College of Art.

Short courses

The short course department at LCF offers the greatest number of specialist fashion short courses in the UK. Over 200 different short courses are offered. These short courses run all of the College's 6 sites across London. Last year over 5,200 students attended one of the evening, daytime, weekend, or e-learning short courses. Subject areas include:

• Young creatives workshops for 16-18 year olds
• E-Learning] (short courses delivered online via virtual lectures and chat sessions)
• Make up and hair styling
• Beauty therapy, aesthetic therapy and fragrance
• Fashion photography and styling
• Fashion design
• Pattern cutting
• Garment production and sewing skills
• Textiles
• Footwear, jewellery and accessories
• Millinery
• Fashion business managment
• Fashion retail
• Marketing, media and communications
• Professional development (short courses designed specifically for those already working in the fashion industry)

E-learning short courses are a way of studying an LCF short courses without attending classes in London. Students attend weekly pre-arranged 'virtual lectures'. Student communicate using text chat (the software is called Blackboard or Wimba Pronto) which involves typing text into a message box creating a dialogue with tutor/fellow students. In addition they may participate in an interactive seminar (using a software called Wimba) which includes voice and video chat, as well as an opportunity to 'share' their tutor's desktop so that s/he can navigate students through websites and other work. A total of 8 different e-learning short courses are currently offered. Subjects include: fashion drawing/illustration, journalism, marketing/branding, fashion merchandising and fashion management.

London College of Fashion short courses in the Middle East

LCF holds a portfolio of short courses in the Middle East every six months (May & October). The courses take place at The Pullman Hotel, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai. London College of Fashion - Short courses in the Middle East.

Study Abroad

The Study Abroad programmes are an opportunity to study in London for students unable to participate in the undergraduate programmes and can be studied for credits or purely for personal pleasure. Students from more than 60 US colleges have enrolled on the programme, which is designed to complement the US academic semester and to transfer/contribute to credits.
