The university comprises five colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and University College for adult students.[2]
Founded in 1920, the university is located in West Haven, Connecticut, which borders the larger city of New Haven and Long Island Sound. In the five years leading up to 2011 the university’s undergraduate and graduate student enrollment increased by 28% and as of fall 2011 totals over 6,000 students.
The University is a member of the Northeast-10 Conference and its mascot is the Charger, a medieval war horse. In 2008-2009, new student applications increased 100 percent.[3] New facilities, including the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center, the new $46 million Soundview residence hall, and the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science which opened in 2010.[4]
Situated on 84 acres overlooking the Connecticut shoreline the main campus is 90 minutes by train to New York City and 2 ½ hours from Boston. Five satellite campuses are located in:
U.S. News & World Report magazine has named the university the 110th best regional university in the Northern United States in its annual "America's Best Colleges" rankings.[6]

Academic Overview
Approximately 33% of students are enrolled in arts and sciences, 21% in business, 12% in engineering, and 34% in criminal justice and forensic sciences.[7]
A number of the university’s undergraduate degree programs have been nationally recognized, most notably the nationally accredited engineering programs, forensic science, marine biology, and music and sound recording, as well as music industry.[8] The College of Arts and Sciences Theater program has been selected to host the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in January 2012.[9]

WNHU
Main article: WNHUThe University's non-commercial radio station, WNHU-FM, first signed onto the air at 1600 EDT on July 4, 1973. WNHU is broadcast on 88.7 FM. WNHU is acclaimed by many as the best college radio station in the state of Connecticut,[citation needed] and has won the New Haven Advocate award for Best College Radio station for over 4 consecutive years.[when?][citation needed]
