It is on theMitchell Highway and the Broken Hill railway line.The largest town and council seat is Molong. It also includes the towns of Canowindra, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra and Yeoval.
The area includes the site of Australia's first gold rush, Ophir. It is also known for agriculture (including grape growing and wine-production), tourism, (including ballooning) and mining.
