New South Wales Department of Local Government

The Department of Local Government is the agency of the Government of New South Wales that is responsible for administering legislation in relation to NSW's local government areas and advising the NSW Minister for Local Government, currently Paul Lynch, on local government matters. Its Director General is Mr Garry Payne and its Deputy Director General is Ross Woodward.

Corporate objectives

Its Charter is: "To provide a range of continuous improvement mechanisms which encourage, assist and promote excellence in the operation of the Local Government sector, for the benefit of the wider community"

Its corporate objectives are:
*Provide a clear legislative framework for the roles and responsibilities of Local Government
*Manage performance to ensure greater compliance and financial viability of the Local Government sector
*Provide strategic advice to the Government to facilitate effective decision making for the Local Government sector
*Deliver optimal use of resources and excellence in performance
*Maintain effective communication and consultative mechanisms with key stakeholders and the community
*Maximise knowledge within the organisation to better meet the needs of the Local Government sector
*Continue successful operations in Nowra
*Focus on priority issues for State and Local Government
*Provide a framework for the equitable allocation of funds
