It is the world's largest manufacturer of cables.[2] It has an industrial presence in nearly 40 countries, over 23,000 employees and sales of around €6 billion a year. Nexans was founded in 2000 as a business unit of the telecommunications firm Alcatel after its acquisition of a number of companies in the cable sector. It was spun out and listed on the Paris stock exchange the following year.[3] It is currently a member of the CAC Mid 60 stock index.
