"Ninety Miles Away" is episode 129 of The West Wing. The title is a reference to the distance between United States and Cuban soil.

Plot

When speculations fly surrounding the nexus between communist Cuba and the capitalist United States, President Bartlet is propelled into a dubious conundrum – that is, to continue secret talks with Cuba's ailing dictator which Leo is involved with and lift an antiquated embargo or to yield to bi-partisan political pressure and reaffirm 40-year-old sanctions. A Florida Senator (played by Brian Dennehy) knows the rumour about Castro and the talks and also knows the history about Kate Harper's CIA Cuba background and Leo.

Meanwhile, Leo and Kate learn that they have more in common than politics when a distant memory of corrupted elections and bar room antics reveal a more intimate connection, and Charlie tries to deal with a bug infestation without destroying the White House in the process.

Note

In the opening scenes of the episode, it is shown that Leo speaks fluent Spanish.
