Upstairs at the White House, meanwhile, the residence remains shaken in the wake of Zoey's traumatizing abduction. Says Abbey: "I blame Jed."The title of the episode, "Jefferson Lives," is in reference to one of Bartlet's favorite stories in American History. The story is in reference to

John Adams' final words were of his lifetime political rival Thomas Jefferson. Adams died moments after uttering the phrase, "Jefferson Lives," not knowing that Jefferson had actually passed hours before inMonticello ,Virginia .The time-line of the episode represents an apparent continuity error. In "Commencement," Josh says "Today is 5-7," and the kidnapping begins that night and plays out over the next several days. "Jefferson Lives" takes place on July 4th, and Abbey says "72 hours, the bruises aren't even…" The implication is that it is about a week since Zoey was abducted, yet somehow we have gone from May 7th to July 4th.
