Plagiarism
On May 6, 2006, NBC Sports aired a special program before the Kentucky Derby that plagiarized two passages from "20 Hours in America Part II", specifically "everytime we think we've measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we are reminded that that capacity may well be limitless" Ironically, the feature followed a commercial for the last two episodes of "The West Wing", which were aired by NBC. The freelance writer responsible for the content was fired. [cite news | last=Sandomir | first=Richard | date=2006-05-11 | title=NBC Admits Plagiarism in Feature Before Derby | work=The New York Times | url=http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/11/sports/othersports/11derby.html] In the episode Sam Seaborn says, "Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright."
Trivia
The popular "Streets of Heaven" speech given by President Josiah Bartlet in the episode was partially inspired by Tom Hanks's acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 66th Academy Awards in 1994 for his role in Philadelphia with the direct quote "the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels."
