The company was founded in 1982 by former National Association of Broadcasters joint board chairman and current Broadcasters Foundation of America chairman Phil Lombardo,[1] who is also an investor in SNN Local News 6, a 24-hour cable news channel in Sarasota, Florida owned by LDB Media, LLC.[2]
All of Citadel's major network affiliates share the same branding identity. They each use a variation of the circle logo and share the same website design style. Most of their stations also carry an additional network on their digital subchannel; WOI, WHBF, and KLKN carry the Retro Television Network and KCAU carries The Local AccuWeather Channel.
For news, the stations broadcast in high-definition, have similar sets and graphics, and use the music package specified for the network they're affiliated with; the ABC affiliates use Frank Gari's Eyewitness News (ABC O&O News Collection) and the CBS affiliate uses Gari's CBS Enforcer Music Collection. For weather, their systems are usually referred to on-air as ESP: Live (Exclusive Storm Prediction). Also, until 2011, the stations signed-off overnight and did not broadcast their networks' overnight newscasts.
Recently-acquired WLNE incorporates a stylized "6" (dating back to 1994) in its version of the circle logo. Its weather system is referred to on-air as Stormtracker. Currently, it does not carry an additional network on its subchannel.
