The soap started in 1995, and was set in a fictional Gym Club called Malhação on Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Through the years the location varied slightly. Although the name of the soap remains the same, it is now set in the Múltipla Escolha (English: Multiple Choice) High School. In 2009, the location became a High School placed within a Shopping mall.
Malhação was very popular in Portugal (known as New Wave, when was broadcasted on SIC). The show inspired others soaps, like portuguese channel TVI's Morangos com Açúcar, which is strongly based on the Malhação format, and brazilian channel Rede Record's , Alta Estação (High Station).
The show reached its peak in 2004, with Guilherme Berenguer and Juliana Didone as the leads, and the ratings decreased from this season on reach an incredible 42 million viewers. In 2005 and 2006, Malhação lost a huge part of its fanbase to the Mexican teen soap Rebelde, airing at SBT. Malhação used the technique Cold open by the end of 2007.
