It lies to the southwest of the city close to the Port Hills. It is named after a village in Derbyshire.
Hillmorton and Spreydon lie to the north. Somerfield is to the east and Cashmere to the southeast. The hill suburb of Westmoreland was developed to the south during the 1980s. To the west lies farmland then Halswell
Hoon Hay valley is a rural valley approximately 2 km southwest of the suburb. Cashmere Stream, a tributary of the Heathcote River, flows down the valley.

- Hoon Hay school is a coeducational state contributing primary (years 1-6) school with a roll of 402 and a decile rating of 7. [2]
- Our Lady of the Assumption school is a coeducational state integrated primary school (years 1-8) with a roll of 223 and a decile rating of 8. [3] The school was founded by the Catholic Church in 1957.[4]
