List of Tyne and Wear Metro stationsAirport is a terminus station of the Green line of the Tyne and Wear Metro that serves Newcastle Airport, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Services towards Sunderland via Newcastle upon Tyne city centre operate between the hours of 0500 and 2300 daily, with a journey time to Newcastle's Central Station of 26 minutes and to Sunderland city centre in about 54 minutes. The frequency of services is generally every 12 minutes during the daytime and every 15 minutes during the evening and on Sundays.
The station is known as Airport rather than Newcastle Airport. It consists of an island platform, with a walkway connecting it directly to the airport terminal building. The station was not part of the original Metro network, but appeared on a preliminary map entitled "Possible extensions to the Metro system" in 1978, and again in a revised map in 1979.
The Airport extension was opened on 17 November 1991 and cost £12 million[1]. Before the Metro was finally extended to Airport, passengers had to alight at Bank Foot and take the M77 shuttle bus to the airport. The bus service was withdrawn when the extension was opened.
Callerton Parkway was built at the same time as the extension, and is the one intermediate stop between Bank Foot and Airport. At this station long stay car parking for airport users exists; as Callerton Parkway and Airport stations are in the same zone, passengers can travel for the cheapest single fare - £1.40 as of 4 January 2009.
The station was used by 324,000 passengers in the period 2008/2009. Despite this relatively low usage the station is ranked seventh in terms of revenue due to the high number of cash fares generated by occasional users returning from holiday. Ticket gates are to be installed at the station during 2010.[2]
