History
In the 1850s Newcastle upon Tyne's hospitals for mentally ill patients were overcrowding; a new asylum was promised in Coxlodge, where a 50-acre (200,000 m2) farmstead known as Dodd's Farm had been purchased. In 1864 initial plans were drawn up, and William Lambie Moffatt was mentioned as an architect.[1] It opened as Newcastle upon Tyne Borough Lunatic Asylum in July 1869. In 1882 it changed its name to Newcastle upon Tyne City Lunatic Asylum.[2]
In 1884 permission was granted to extend the hospital, and the East and West Pavilions were completed in 1887. The asylum steadily grew, with more buildings were erected. During the First World War the patients were evacuated and the hospital became Northumberland No1 War Hospital for wounded soldiers, who were brought there by train. In 1921 it became an asylum again. In 1948 the National Health Service took over the hospital and changed the name to St Nicholas Hospital.[2]
Recent history
In 2004 a new clinic was built, the Bamburgh Clinic, costing a total of £22.024 million. Work started in November 2004 and was completed in April 2006.[3] The brownfield site was previously a fish factory.
The site is bordered by residential properties, a Northumberland Wildlife Trust wildlife centre and office,[4] and a Royal Mail postal depot.
In 2009 the renovation of the Victorian hospital building was nominated for the Best Design in the Community Benefit category of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North-East Renaissance Awards. It is one of eight short-listed from 20 entries. The building housing the Greentrees unit and the Lennox Ward, cost around £8 million.[5]
Jubilee Theatre
Main article: Jubilee TheatreThe hospital also includes the Jubilee Theatre, a theatre which opened in 1899. Currently the theatre is primarily used by two groups: Juniper Productions (founded 1998) a drama group for sufferers of Mental Health Difficulties, and since 1992 an external theatre company, First Act Theatre.
