The collection
The museum commemorates the services of the infantry in South Wales, namely the Welch Regiment (1719–1969) and more recently the Royal Regiment of Wales. In addition to the services of the regular battalions of the regiment, the museum commemorates the history of the Glamorgan militia and the auxiliary land forces of South Wales (1757–1969) which includes the Infantry, the Rifle Volunteers, and the Yeomanry Cavalry.[2]
All the items in the museum closely relate to the Welch Regiment and cover regimental archives, displays of infantry weapons, coins and the regiment's medal collection plus exhibits on personalities from regimental history and the social history and traditions of the regiment. The museum also displays items relating to the Royal Regiment of Wales, into which the Welch Regiment was amalgamated.
Royal Regiment of Wales
The Royal Regiment of Wales was formed in 1969 by the amalgamation of two of Wales' most famous and distinguished regiments, namely The South Wales Borderers (24th Foot) and The Welch Regiment (41st/69th Foot), who took part in the Marlborough campaigns, the American War of Independence, the Sikh wars and the Anglo-Zulu war.[3]
The Welch Regiment, formed in 1719 as a Regiment of Invalids for garrison duties, went on to distinguish itself in a wide variety of campaigns, most notably in Canada, the Crimea and the Napoleonic Wars, in which elements served at both Waterloo and with the Royal Navy, and not to mention World War I and World War II and more recently Korea.[3]
