Animal Wall

The Animal Wall is a sculptured wall depicting different animals in Cardiff, Wales. It is a Grade I listed structure [ [http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/arch/landscapes/ukpg/sites/cardiffc.htm Animal Wall-Grade I Listed] ] .

History

The Animal Wall was designed by William Burges in 1866, but it was not built until 1890, after William Burges's sudden death in 1881. The work of the restoration of Cardiff Castle and the building of the Animal Wall for the Marquess of Bute, was continued by his former assistant William Frame [ [http://www.cardiffcastle.com/past/timeline.htm Cardiff Castle timeline] ] .

William Frame was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England in 1846. He was retained by Lord Bute to complete projects at Cardiff Castle, Castell Coch, and other projects. William Frame's own designs include the Grade I listed Pierhead Building in Tiger Bay (now called Cardiff Bay), built in 1897 [ [http://www.personalia.co.uk/medals/MEDALS.htm William Frame] ] . The wall was moved about m to ft|50|abbr=no from outside Cardiff Castle to its present location outside Bute Park in 1925, due to road widening in front of the castle in Duke Street and Castle Street (A4161).
