Moonee Ponds is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia located in the suburb of Moonee Ponds, on the Craigieburn railway line. Moonee Ponds is classed as a Host Station and is in Metcard Zone 1.

Facilities

Moonee Ponds is located at the northern end of the Puckle Street level crossing, with station access from Norwood Cresent, Puckle and Margaret Streets. An underpass is situated at the Flinders Street end of the station.

The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large red brick building, while platform 2 has a smaller brick building. Three Metcard ticket vending machine are located at the entrance to platform 1, two machines are coin only machines, but a larger machine is able to dispense most ticket options available, and accepts coins, notes and EFTPOS payments. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 2. In late 2009 Myki vending machines were installed on both Platform 1 and Platform 2. 4 Myki scanners now exist on each platform, a total of 8 for the station. Scanners and vending machines were turned on and working from 29 December 2009. A small privately operated magazine stand also operates on platform 1, usually only during the morning peak.

History

Moonee Ponds station opened on 1 November 1860, as part of the private Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company line to Essendon. The station closed with the line in 1864 until it was reopened in 1871 under government ownership.[1] The station building was provided in 1882, with a signal box provided in 1889 to control interlocked gates at the Puckle Street level crossing, until replaced by boom barriers in 1969.[2] Automatic signalling and electrification were provided in 1918 and 1919 respectively.[3]
