U.S. Military connector specifications

Connectors used by the U.S. Military are described in military specifications documents, with the format MIL-C-26482 (older format) or MIL-DTL-26482 (current format). These differ in purpose from military standards (e.g. MIL-STD...) in that standards are used to document performance and manufacturing requirements, while specifications are used to document interoperability and other physical characteristics.

MIL-SPEC electrical connectors

MIL-DTL-38999 connector set (plug and socket) plated in nickel-teflon composite.
  • MIL-DTL-26482 (formerly MIL-C-26482) is sealed against fluids and dust (IP67) and used for many types of electrical connections. Many applications have been developed that deviate from the official military specification. While typically found with a number of circular pins, this connector has also been used as the outer shell for Industrial Ethernet and may also be compatible with IEC 60603-7 variant 11. MIL-C-26482 series connectors include two series: MIL-DTL-26482 Series I and MIL-DTL-26482 Series II. MIL-DTL-26482 series I includes MS3110, MS3111, MS3112, MS3114 and MS3116 connectors. MIL-DTL-26482 series II includes MS3470, MS3474, MS3475 and MS3476 connectors.
  • MIL-DTL-38999 General Specification for Connectors, Electrical, Circular, Miniature, High Density, Quick Disconnect (Bayonet, Threaded, and Breech Coupling), Environment Resistant, Removable Crimp and Hermetic Solder Contacts MIL-DTL-38999 series connectors include four series of connectors:MIL-DTL-38999 I, MIL-DTL-38999 II, MIL-DTL-38999 III, MIL-DTL-38999 IV
  • MIL-PRF-39012 General Specification for Connectors, Coaxial, Radio Frequency (RF), including BNC, TNC, SMA, SMB connectors.
  • MIL-DTL-83513 General Specification for Connectors, Electrical, Rectangular, Microminiature, Polarized Shell.
  • MIL-DTL-32139 General Specification for Connectors, Electrical, Rectangular, Nanominiature, Polarized Shell.
  • MIL-DTL-22992 General Specification for Connectors, Plugs and Receptacles, Electrical, Waterproof, Quick Disconnect, Heavy Duty Type.
  • MIL-DTL-83538 General Specification for Connectors, and Accessories, Electrical, Circular, Umbilical, Environment Resistant, Removable Crimp Contacts for MIL-STD-1760 Applications (Metric). The connector assembly provides the necessary connections required to meet MIL-STD-1760, class I electrical interface between stores and their associated launchers using a "blind mating" mechanism. The connector assembly consists of a receptacle installed on the launcher, a receptacle installed on the store, and a buffer plug installed between the two receptacles. This specification also includes the required mounting adapters and nut, accessory adapter, cable bushing, and protective covers.

MIL-SPEC fiber-optic connectors and termini

  • MIL-DTL-83526 This specification covers the characteristics, performance and testing criteria for a circular, environmental resistant, hermaphroditic interface, fiber-optic connector. The connectors covered have a consistent and predictable optical performance and are sufficiently rugged to withstand military field application. This specification includes expanded-beam fiber-optic connectors.
  • MIL-PRF-28876 This specification covers the performance requirements for circular, plug and receptacle style, multiple removable termini, fiber optic connectors that are for Department of Defense applications and that are compatible with multiple transmission element cables. Fiber optic connectors specified herein cover a family of general purpose, interconnection hardware providing a variety of compatible optical coupling arrangements. Connector parts specified within this specification include connector shells, connector inserts, connector insert retention nuts, connector backshells, and connector dust caps.
  • MIL-PRF-29504 (formerly MIL-T-29504) This specification covers the general requirements for removable crimp and epoxy type fiber optic termini for use in connectors and other fiber-optic components. These termini are capable of operating within the temperature ranges as specified.
  • MIL-PRF-64266 This specification covers the general requirements for the "next generation" fiber-optic connector. This connector is hermaphroditic and intended for use in both aerospace and maritime applications.
