Marika Gombitová (Slovak: [ˈmarɪka ˈɡombɪtovaː], born September 12, 1956 in Turany nad Ondavou, Czechoslovakia) is a female singer-songwriter. Having sold one million albums at least, she is considered as the most popular female vocalist in Slovakia.[1][2] Her vocal range - falsetto excluding - overpasses two octaves; from e to fis2.[3] The authors of her biography book, published in 2008, labeled Gombitová as "a genius singer and a very exclusive person."[3]

Shortly after finishing the second album Môj malý príbeh (1981), released on the major domestic label OPUS, her career was adversely affected by a serious single-car accident on December 1, 1980. Although the singer has survived, as a result of backbone and spinal cord injuries she has been tied to a wheelchair for life. Following a six month recovery, the artist returned to the spotlight, making top rankings and even touring again. Her condition forced her to withdraw from public in the late 1990s, eventually. Prior to that, she released Zostaň (1994), her final studio set to date.[3] Gombitová's work, however, remains played by the leading Slovak and Czech radio stations. Most currently, her double platinum[4] compilation entitled Vyznanie peaked at number #23 in the Czech Albums chart in 2007,[5] while her latest airplay single "Tak som chcela všetkých milovať" charted on the Slovak Rádio SK 50 Oficiálna component chart at number #20.[6]

Amongs her most significant songs are denoted "Koloseum" and, especially, "Vyznanie"
(English: "Why (Must I Always Fail)?"). The composition received several music awards, including the first prize at the 4th Intervision Song Festival contest in Sopot, Poland in 1980.[7][8] In 2007, the single was voted by Slovak TV audience as Hit of the Century in the country.[9] On June 20, 1990 Gombitová became the first Czechoslovak singer to appear on the Austrian chart Die Großen Zehn by ORF,[10] presenting "Babylónia" from Kam idú ľudia? (1990). The title song from the album was dedicated to Stevie Wonder himself. The two met on Spring 1989, but the original plans to record a duet in common failed at last.[11][12]

Biography

1956–74: Early years and Profily band

Marika Gombitová was born on September 12, 1956 in village Turany nad Ondavou, east Slovakia, as the seventh descendent of Michal (December 19, 1913) and Margita (August 19, 1921, née Novotňáková). However two of their former daughters - one of which was already given the name [Mária] - died due to hypothermia.[13] Since the age of nine, she was taking piano lessons in the local Ľudová škola umenia (LŠU) in Stropkov. Following her failure to study singing at Music school, she continued with engineering in Košice. While on high school, she sang with an amateur band called Profily. Later she would shortly perform for the orchestras of Juraj Szabadoš and/or Július Olajoš.[12]

1975–77: Early recordings, Modus band and "Úsmev"

In 1975, Gombitová made her first recordings ("Karta" and "Nájdem hviezdu") at Slovak Radio Košice. The next year, she received an offer from Janko Lehotský, frontman of the Modus band, to join his professional group. Following the leaving exam she, therefore, moved to Bratislava[12] and got an initial exposure in Slovak Television with songs "Lúčenie" and "Túto pieseň spievam vám" (both co-written by Lehotský), performed in Chvíľa pre pesničku in 1976.[4] At first, she would release a number of singles with Modus (such as "Veľký sen mora", "Margaréta", "Zažni" - all from 1977) as a backing vocalist. Her solo part came along with the Bratislavská lýra '77 winning composition "Úsmev" that featured also vocal contributions by Lehotský, Miro Žbirka and Miro Jevčák.[14] Subsequently, Gombitová recorded her debut solo single entitled "Boľavé námestie."[15] For the first time, her name appears in the national music poll Zlatý slavík, being ranked as the 46th Most Popular Female Singer in Czechoslovakia in 1977 (Modus scored at number #6).[16]

1978–80: "Študentská láska," "Vyznanie," Intervision prize and car accident

There's no way to accept this and if someone would claim such thing, you don't buy it.

—Marika Gombitová[17]

The second solo single by Gombitová, "Študentská láska," was issued in 1978. The song won two awards at the Bratislavská lýra '78 festival, being classified as the most selling SP in July in Slovakia.[18] She also recorded four tracks on the Motion Picture Soundtrack of Smoliari (issued in 1979), and her position in annual Zlatý slavík skyrocketed to number #4 this time (Next year she scored at #3, while at #2 in 1980).[19] Following her contribution to the Collegium Musicum's full length project entitled On a Ona, Gombitová along with Modus was headed in February 1979 to the recording studio to work on their self-titled debut album. In addition, she would also release her own debut set Dievča do dažďa. With its pilot single "Vyznanie," Gombitová entered the 4th Intervision Song Festival held in Sopot, Poland on August 20-23, 1980. As a result, she received the first prize in the competition representing record companies, shared with Nikolai Gnatiuk from Russia (for the song "Dance on a Drum").[20]
