She has been well known for her personal life, especially for her marriage to German football coach and former player Lothar Matthäus.

Early life

Matthäus was born as Marijana Čolić on 27 September 1971 in Vrbas (SFR Yugoslavia then, Serbia now) to mother Dušanka and father Bora Čolić. She has a brother, Dragan, her two years junior.[1] Simultaneously with her elementary school, Matthäus enrolled in and finished music school and took dancing lessons.[2] She developed her love for fashion at early age, after her mother took her to fashion shows in Belgrade.

Career

Fashion career

Matthäus started modelling aged fifteen, after she moved to Novi Sad with her family. However, she put her career aside in 1990, when she married businessman Miodrag Kostić.[3] In 2003, Matthäus opened her first boutique My Style in Budapest, Hungary, where she was living with her second husband Lothar Matthäus.[4] Six years later, she established her own design label, Mariana Class. However, her first collection did not met with expected acclaim.[5] On 1 June 2010, Matthäus presented her first line of swimsuits.[6] The creations were worn by the competitors of Serbian beauty pageant Miss of Tourism 2010.[7] Her fashion show, held on 17 March 2011 in the Hotel Moskva, was attended by her former husband Lothar Matthäus.[8] In September 2011, Matthäus had an acclaimed fashion show in Terazije Theatre, representing her new line Black & White World.[9]

Serbian turbo folk singer Svetlana Ceca Ražnatović often wears Matthäus' creations.[10][11] On 27 April 2010, upon the release of her novel Amouage, Matthäus also released her first fragrance, which she also named Amouage.[12]

Other work and ventures

In January 2010, Matthäus was the part of organization of a humanitarian ball that was held on 29 January in Belgrade.[13][14][15] On 27 April 2010, Matthäus published her autobiography Amouage,[16][17] and also presented her first fragrance of the same name.[12] However, her former husband Lothar Matthäus criticized the novel, stating that "Marijana should have stocked to fashion, and not reveal the details of their intimacy".[18] In 2011, Matthäus confirmed she was working on her second novel.[19]

In July, Matthäus was rumoured to be taking part in reality show Survivor Serbia VIP: Philippines, but it eventually did not happen.[20] Earlier that year, she stated she was offered a guest spot on the ITV television series Footballers' Wives, but that she turned it down due to her business schedule.[21][22]

Personal and media life

Matthäus married twice. In 1990, she married Serbian businessman Miodrag Kostić Kole, with whom she has three children — Dajana (born 1990), Aleksandar (born 1993) and Anđela (born 1997). Both Aleksandar and Anđela were born in Florida, the United States. After Matthäus' divorce from Kostić in 1999, she and her children briefly lived in New York City.[16] Matthäus is rumoured to have been married to an Italian businessman after she had divorced Kostić, but the rumour is yet to be confirmed.[23]

Matthäus married German football coach and former player Lothar Matthäus on 27 September 2003 in Belgrade. They separated in 2007, and the divorce was finalized in 2009 after year–long court case in Salzburg, Austria, over the division of assets.[23][24] The two remained on friendly terms after the divorce,[25] with Matthäus keeping the surname of her former husband. Following the release of her autobiographical novel Amouage in 2010, Lothar Matthäus criticized his former wife by stating that "Marijana should have stocked to fashion, and not reveal the details of their intimacy".[18] On 17 March 2011, Lothar Matthäus attended Matthäus' fashion show in Belgrade.[8]

Matthäus currently divides her home between Belgrade, Budapest and London.[2] Reportedly, she is influent in Serbian, English and Italian, and is able to conserve in Hungarian and German.[26] Matthäus also has a bachelor's degree in marketing.[27]

Image in the media

Public reception of Matthäus has been mixed in Serbia. Despite the fact she has been praised for her beauty and her work in fashion, media has labelled her a "serial bride who built a career on her marriages"[21][28] and even "illiterate", due to her frequent lapsus linguae.[29][30] She, however, responded that she "was glad that people laughed to her lapses", "[...] It is good to know that you made someone smile at these hard times".[31] Matthäus has also been criticized for "bragging to much about her life and her wealth".[32]

In 2011, Serbian Internet LGTB portal GayEcho voted her out as "most irritating female celebrity in Serbia".[33] Later in May, famous Serbian fashion designer Verica Rakočević stated she "did not consider Matthäus as her colleague and a fashion designer".[19][34] On 15 October 2011, television presenter and journalist Luna Lu accused Matthäus that she "had not written her book Amouage, but that she paid someone to write it".[35]
