- For the community formerly of this name, see Dinsmore, California.
Dinsmores is an locality[1] in Humboldt County, California. It lies at an elevation of 4455 feet (1358 m).[2]
The USGS GNIS database describes Dinsmores using its "populated place" feature class, which is tersely defined as having a "permanent human population"[2]. However, the GNIS metadata warns against taking feature class names literally, as "they may not conform exactly" with "dictionary definitions" and "are not always intuitive".[3] The phrase "permanent human population" does not necessarily mean the place is presently inhabited, merely that at some time it was the permanent home of some people. The GNIS database does not contain information on the present-day condition of the populated places. Ghost towns, may be classed as "populated places",[4] Bodie, California for example.[5] David Durham describes Dinsmores as a "locality", in contrast to places like Dinsmore, which he calls a "village".[1]
