It consists of two side-platforms with at-grade access. Cowan is served by the 'intercity' Newcastle & Central Coast line.

History
Cowan station opened in 1890.[1] The station is considered the northernmost suburban station for ticketing purposes, however suburban trains now terminate at Berowra, one station to the south.
