History

Dublin Coffman High School was originally established as Dublin High School in January of 1973 and was the only high school in the Dublin school district at that time. Dublin High School changed it's name to Dublin Coffman High School in 1990 after the school's acceptance into the Ohio Capital Conference and plans to build a second high school, eventually named Dublin Scioto, were announced. Over its almost forty year history, Coffman has gone through many additions and upgrades; the most major include the expansion of the B building, which now houses the English, World Languages, and Social Studies departments, and the addition of the A building, which encompasses the library, technology related classes, Mathematics, and Science departments.

Most recently beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, Dublin Coffman went under a series of renovations to the building. These renovations made it possible to add 10 classrooms, to seal the outdoor courtyard (addition of classrooms off of the bridge between the A and B buildings and below the bridge as well), moved the location of the administrative offices and main entrance to the opposite side of the building where the art classrooms were located by the cafeteria requiring that the main entrance shift to this side of the building (where "teacher" parking is located, for those who are familiar with the layout) instead of the door 2 entrance. In addition to this, the renovations converted the old administrative area to classrooms. The famous Rock Shop was moved from it's original location to where the band trophy case was located in the cafeteria near the girl's restroom in order to make room for the new administrative area.[3]. Dublin Coffman High School is a part of the Dublin City School District in central Ohio. The Dublin City School District is awarded Ohio's highest academic rating, Excellent with Distinction, for its eighth consecutive year.[4]. Dublin Coffman High School hosted Huey Lewis & The News in July 2005. Dublin Coffman's mascot is the Shamrocks, aka the Rocks.

Clubs and activities

The school's Latin Club functions as a local chapter of both the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL)[5] and National Junior Classical League (NJCL).[6]

The school's Drama Club recently performed the high school premiere of Tyra Palmquist's The Island of Doctor Moreau.

Music Program

The Dublin Coffman Marching Band has been competing in Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) competitions for over 20 years and has consecutively received superior ratings. In 2007 the band performed in its first Bands of America (BOA) contest in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Also in the 2007 season, the band set a school record with a high score of 287.62 out of a possible score of 300.

The 2009 Symphonic band went to OMEA state contest and received its first superior rating in many years.

The band is directed by Jeremy Bradstreet with assistant directors Kevin H. Wallick, Andrew Rice, Wendy Reeves, and Daniel Hostetler.

The curriculum and student handbook at Dublin Coffman High School, as well as at the other two high schools in the Dublin City School District is being revised in order to conform with the International Baccalaureate degree program.[10] These changes include recognizing all students with a GPA of 4.1 or above to receive valedictorian status (a shift which is projected to result in the naming of over 100 valedictorians; a shift from a seven period day to an eight period day; and a change from year long 1.0 credit courses to semester 0.5 credit courses.[10] Students will now receive 0.5 credits for each semester, instead of 1.0 credit at the end of the year.[10]

Sports Rivalries

The biggest rivalry among all sports at Dublin Coffman High School is the rivalry against Hilliard Davidson High School. Sometimes compared to the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry except at the high school level, there is a ton of tradition behind this rivalry. This rivalry dates back to the 1970s when the schools were founded. Each year there is some kind of prank or vandalism done to one or both of the schools to signify the severe dislike for one another. For instance, in 2003 there were 119 seniors from Hilliard Davidson who got arrested for painting Coffman's spirit rock outside of the stadium before the friday night football game.[13].The rocking painting, along with behavior resembling a riot, was enough to bring police to the scene. Although the heckling can become fierce, for the most part the rivalry has been described as "good, clean, fun."[14]
