Summary

Route A12, plying between Sai Wan Ho Ferry Pier and the new Hong Kong International Airport, was started on July 6, 1998 to coincide with the opening of the airport, mainly serving the Eastern District between North Point and Sai Wan Ho.

There was no airport bus route established to serve the communities of Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan. In view of this, New World First Bus, the bus operator which did not operate any airbus route, suggested to the Transport Department the idea of airport bus route serving the two communities, but finally Citybus knew the idea, and extended the route to Chai Wan (East) via Island Eastern Corridor and Heng Fa Chuen (HFC) on December 20, 1998. It was then diverted via Chai Wan Road slope on November 6, 2000, and an auxiliary route, P12, was started to serve the residential development of HFC and the airport backup area, which would be omitted by A12 under the diversion.

As the route lengthens, the duration of journey increased sharply, and the frequent traffic congestion in Central also lengthens the journey time. In view of the losing patronage and the competition from MTR Airport Express, Citybus carried out service rationalization on routes A11 and A12 on April 2, 2001. Under this, A12 omits North Point and Causeway Bay in order to save time and increase patronage. The urban terminus of the route was relocated to Island Resort on July 22, 2001.

The route started to serve Shek Tong Tsui in the Central and Western District with effect from January 27, 2002 in order to attract residents there to travel to the airport by airport bus, but it eventually became the key route for Western residents travelling and commuting to the Eastern District. The demand was so high that from 2009, a special departure departing from Shek Tong Tsui to Siu Sai Wan is provided every morning.
