The chain currently operates more than 90 hotels in 26 countries; 34 hotels are under construction and are set for completion by 2010. Mövenpick also operates 5 luxury cruise ships on the Nile and Lake Nasser.[2]
The hotel chain serves 5.8 million people annually. The World Travel Market in London named Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts as the "fastest growing hotel chain in the Middle East" in 2003.[3]

History
Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts began in 1973 with the opening of two hotels near Zurich Airport and in Regensdorf. The company was originally called The Mövenpick Hotel Group and was a part of The Mövenpick Group that was founded in 1948 by Ueli Prager. In 1976, the company opened its first hotel outside of Europe in Cairo, adjacent to the pyramids at Giza. In 1991, the first Mövenpick luxury cruiser, the H.S. Radamis, set off on the Nile between Aswan and Luxor. The company is an international upscale hotel management company with roots in Switzerland and over 90 properties existing or under construction in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.[4]

The company’s portfolio includes both leased hotels and hotels under management contracts throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Movenpick Hotels & Resorts sales in 2007 wereCHF831.2 million, a 19% rise compared to 2006. The company's earnings before interest and taxes increased by 53% to CHF13.3 million throughout the same period.[5] Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts vision is: To be the preferred and most enjoyable, upscale hotel management company of Swiss origin, for guests, employees, hotel owners and shareholders.[6] The company is currently pursuing an aggressive expansion plan to fulfill its strategic objective for 100 hotels by 2010.[7]

Specific hotels
The Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts portfolio continues to prosper in Jordan with the addition of a 5-star resort in Tala Bay-Aqaba. Owned by Zara South Coast Development Company (a subsidiary of Zara Investment Holding), Mövenpick Resort Tala Bay Aqaba will be the fifth hotel in Jordan to be operated by the Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts group. The new resort is located on the southern shores of Aqaba, turning the Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts into the only group to be serving both of the city's buzzing north and south beaches. In 2010, a hotel was opened in Ramallah, West Bank.
