The Charleston–North Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the
United States Census Bureau , is an area consisting of three counties in the Low Country region ofSouth Carolina , anchored by the cities of Charleston and North Charleston. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 549,033 (though a July 1, 2007 estimate placed the population at 630,100). The racial makeup of the MSA was 65.10% White, 30.80% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.38% of the population.The median income for a household in the MSA was $40,345, and the median income for a family was $47,186.
