- Friant-Kern Canal
The Friant-Kern Canal is a convert|151.8|mi|km long
canal in theU.S. state ofCalifornia . It is part of theCentral Valley Project managed by theUnited States Bureau of Reclamation . Its purpose is to carry water south to augment irrigation capacity in Fresno, Tulare, and Kern counties.The canal begins at Millerton Lake, a reservoir on the
San Joaquin River north of Fresno. The canal runs south along the eastern edge of theSan Joaquin Valley , ending at theKern River near Bakersfield.The canal has a capacity of 5,000 cubic feet per second (142 m³/s), gradually decreasing to 2,000 cubic feet per second (57 m³/s) at the terminus. It was completed in 1951.
