The contest is meant to select a suitable delegate from both islands to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.
The women usually range from ages 18 to 27, and are selected from a pageant held in Trinidad and Tobago, where the winner represents the country at Miss Universe while traditionally the first runner up (second place winner) is sent to Miss World.
The country's representative in 1977, Janelle Commissiong became the first person of African ethnicity to win the Miss Universe contest which was hosted in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In May, 1999, the Miss Universe pageant was hosted at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago. A record eighty-four nations were represented and winner that year was Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana. It was also the first time two of African ethinicity won on consecutive occasions.
Trinidad & Tobago did not send a delegate to Miss Universe in 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1992, 2007 and 2009.
