Anya Ayoung-Chee (born 1981) is a nominee of Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe in 2008 and was a contestant in the Miss Universe 2008 competition.

Early life

Anya Ayoung-Chee hails from the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, born in the very cosmopolitan city of Port of Spain, the only girl in a family of eight.

From an early age she pursued classical ballet training. However it was during her attendance to an all girls secondary school that she discovered her true calling lay in art and design. She continued her education in London and New York, honing her skills and gaining experience which not only made her an established Graphic Artist and Interior Designer, but a formidable business woman as well.

The Tall Man Foundation

In 2007 the Ayoung-Chee created the TallMan Foundations. The events leading to its creation were key in fostering Anya's passion for Youth Outreach and Support initiatives on the island; thus she dedicated her spare time to spearhead and support such programs.

Miss Trinidad & Tobago 2008

There was much controversy surrounding the withdrawal of Trinidad & Tobago from the 2007 Miss Universe Competition, (where they previously secured 2 successful wins in 1977 and 1998) due to lack of funding. The franchise holders were able to secure financial backing ensuring a presence at the competition in 2008.

Anya was one of numerous young women who vied for the coveted title of Miss Trinidad & Tobago Universe, eventually earning the crown with the second runner up being June Lightbourne. On that night Gabrielle Walcott also won the title of Miss Trinidad & Tobago World 2008 (simultaneously contested), and together they began an intense training regime for their respective competitions. Her success in the competition was greatly attributed to her tenacity and wit in answering her final question.

Anya is the second title holder in the franchise's 44-year history to be of Chinese descent, the first being Stephanie Lee Pack in 1974. When asked “Is your Asian heritage an issue since you represent a country with an overwhelming African heritage?” by missology.org. Anya replied, “Trinidad & Tobago is unique in its ethnic make-up because it is a country with people of all races. I am of mixed origin, mainly Chinese, Indian, African and Caucasian, and although my particular mixture is a minority, I represent the unusual combination of ethnicities that defines us as a people”, a statement largely supported by her countrymen.

Charity work and social groups

From 2003 to the present Anya has been a member of the TallMan Foundation which was established by her family for the empowerment of young people in underprivileged areas.

In 2008 the recently formed Youth of the United Nations Group of Trinidad & Tobago, (YOUNG-TT) asked both Anya & Gabrielle Walcott (the Miss Trinidad & Tobago World 2008 delegate), to be spokeswomen and champions for the fledging group. Both young women emphatically accepted the championship during their reign. YOUNG-TT is a youth NGO/ CBO hosting some 300+ members aging from 16-24 with the aim of advocating the United Nations and the Millennium Development Goals through their demographic and age group.
