Albany is a village in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 808 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Albany is located at coor dms|39|13|44|N|82|12|1|W|city (39.228787, -82.200363)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), of which, 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²) of it is land and 0.80% is water.

History

Albany, Ohio was founded in the 1840s. It was one of several stops in Athens County for the Underground Railroad and many former slaves decided to stay in the village. Albany Enterprise Academy, the first school in Athens County for African Americans was in Village, which was then over 90% African American.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 808 people, 352 households, and 222 families residing in the village. The population density was 649.6 people per square mile (251.6/km²). There were 400 housing units at an average density of 321.6/sq mi (124.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.28% White, 1.11% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.49% of the population.

There were 352 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the village the population was spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,534, and the median income for a family was $42,750. Males had a median income of $30,750 versus $22,083 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,047. About 8.3% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.6% of those under age 18 and 15.0% of those age 65 or over.

Festivals

The annual [http://www.pawpawfest.com/ Ohio Pawpaw Festival] , dedicated to North America's largest indigenous fruit, the pawpaw, is held each September at Lake Snowden, near Albany.The Albany Independent Fair is held anually at the Albany Riding Club the first week in september as one of few independent fairs in the state of ohio.

Public services

The residents of Albany are served by the Alexander Local School District and Albany Alexander High School. They are also served by the Athens County Public Library with branches in Albany, Athens, Chauncey, Coolville, Glouster, Nelsonville, and The Plains.
