History
In 1949, Oikos was founded together with the Nordic Society Oikos by a group of Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic ecologists. The purpose was to facilitate communication among scientists in the Nordic countries, which had been isolated from each other during the Second World War and to provide a vehicle for publishing in the growing field of ecology. The journal content should be unbiased with regard to taxonomic group. Later, during the 1970s, the scope was narrowed to studies with relevance to the progress of theory in ecology. Simultaneously, the geographical spread of the authorship was widened. The sister journal Ecography was also established as an outlet for studies with a distinct spatial component.
From 1949 to 1977, the journal appeared with one volume partitioned into three issues per year. From 1977 to 1987, two volumes came out per year, and from 1987 three volumes. As a consequence of this expansion, a permanent editorial office was set up at Lund University.
In 1949–1975 a number of Oikos supplement volumes were published at irregular intervals.

Oikos Blog
The Oikos blog is a space for authors, readers, and the ecological community at large to post and leave comments about papers published in the journal Oikos. The idea is to further the dissemination and publication process in ecology and evolution in addition to traditional peer-reviewed publications. The blog is also a space for the community of ecologists to have dynamic access to dialogue and timely dissemination as well as a space for the community to connect with each other – authors, editors, staff, and readers. A link to the blog can be found in the list of external links below.
Per Brink Oikos Award
The Per Brinck Oikos Award recognizes extraordinary and important contributions to the science of ecology. It is delivered in honor of the Swedish ecologist Professor Per Brinck who has played an instrumental role for the development and recognition of the science of ecology in the Nordic countries, especially as serving as the Editor-in-Chief for Oikos for many years. The award is given annually to a world-leading ecologist, nominated by Oikos' subject editors.
Editorial Structure
Oikos has an international board of subject editors as well as an advisory panel and a publication board. See Editorial Board page for more details. The current Editor-in-Chief is Tim Benton, BA, Oxford, PhD, Cambridge, FSB, FLS, Professor of Population Ecology Institute of Integrative and Comparative Biology, at the University of Leeds.
