The journal is edited by Editor-in-Chief Thomas Alerstam and Deputy Editor-in-Chief Jan-Åke Nilsson.
Journal of Avian Biology is currently ranked 1 of 18 journals in the ISI Ornithology category. It publishes empirical and theoretical research in all areas of ornithology, with an emphasis on ecology, behaviour and evolutionary biology.
Papers are printed under five main headings:
- Reflections are short commentaries
- Point-of-view are short papers on selected topics written by invited authors
- Research articles
- Forum is intended as an arena for communication and comment
- Short communications presents the results of less extensive empirical studies

Volume 1-24 was published as Ornis Scandinavica. Before 2004, there were only 4 issues per year.
