Flanders is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 3,646 at the 2000 census. It is the location of the Big Duck.

It is located on the south side of the Peconic River at its mouth in Peconic Bay. Riverhead is across the river to the north.

Geography

Flanders is located at coor dms|40|54|18|N|72|36|42|W|city (40.905086, -72.611717)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.8 square miles (38.3 km²), of which, 12.3 square miles (31.8 km²) of it is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²) of it (17.04%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,646 people, 1,260 households, and 889 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 297.1 per square mile (114.7/km²). There were 1,521 housing units at an average density of 124.0/sq mi (47.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.23% White, 19.88% African American, 1.37% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 3.81% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.77% of the population.

There were 1,260 households out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.27.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $46,711, and the median income for a family was $49,031. Males had a median income of $37,548 versus $23,897 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,484. About 8.4% of families and 13.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
