The Shire of Metcalfe was a Local Government Area located about convert|105|km|mi|0 north-northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia, and convert|45|km|mi|0 south of the regional city of Bendigo. The shire covered an area of convert|590.52|km2|sqmi|1, and existed from 1860 until 1995.

History

Metcalfe was first incorporated as a district on 14 August 1860, and became a shire on 18 July 1865.

Metcalfe absorbed two boroughs which had previously been separately governed. On 7 October 1870, the Taradale borough was united, while the Chewton borough, created on 14 December 1860 with an area of convert|23.31|km2|sqmi|2, was united on 2 May 1916.cite book|title=Victorian Municipal Directory|year=1992|publisher=Arnall & Jackson|location=Brunswick|pages=759-760 Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room.]

On 20 January 1995, the Shire was abolished, and merged with the City of Castlemaine and the Shires of Maldon and Newstead into the Shire of Mount Alexander. Redesdale and the area around Lake Eppalock was merged into the City of Greater Bendigo.
