Hewlett is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York on the South Shore of Long Island. As of the United States 2000 Census, the CDP population was 7,060.

Hewlett is usually included as one of the Five Towns in the southwestern corner of Nassau County. In the context of the Five Towns, "The Hewletts" or "Hewlett" is often used to refer collectively to the hamlet of Hewlett, together with the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck, along with Woodsburgh. All the communities within Hewlett are part of the Hewlett-Woodmere School District or the Lynbrook Union Free School District.

Geography

Hewlett is located at coor dms|40|38|31|N|73|41|39|W|city (40.641985, -73.694185)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²) of it is land and 1.11% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 7,060 people, 2,634 households, and 1,980 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7,936.0 per square mile (3,062.8/km²). There were 2,735 housing units at an average density of 3,074.4/sq mi (1,186.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.35% White, 0.92% African American, 0.08% Native American, 4.79% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.79% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.67% of the population.

There were 2,634 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $66,550, and the median income for a family was $74,259. Males had a median income of $51,977 versus $40,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $38,803. 2.9% of the population and 1.3% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.8% were under the age of 18 and 5.9% were 65 or older.

Transportation

The Hewlett station provides Long Island Rail Road service on the Far Rockaway Branch to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan.

Education

Most public school students in Hewlett go to the Hewlett-Woodmere School District (District 14), though some attend the schools of the Lynbrook Union Free School District.
