Mundakayam (Malayalam: മുണ്ടക്കയം) is a small town in Kottayam District of Kerala state, South India. It is the gateway to the High Ranges of Kerala, and is at the border of Kottayam and Idukki districts.It is here that the high ranges of south Kerala start. It's one of the most developed towns in Kerala, with rubber plantations, and greenery. The river Manimala runs through Mundakayam. Nearby locations include Panchalimedu, Kuttikkanam, 15 km drive from Mundakayam town and is around 3500 feet above sea level, Peermade and Thekkady.

Mundakayam is exactly 55 km from Kottayam to the East and 56 km from Kumily ( Border of Kerala State & Tamil Nadu State ) to the West. The NH 220 (Kollam - Theni National Highway) passes through Mundakayam. Mundakayam is a land of coffee, pepper, cocoa and natural rubber. The rubber plantations in India had originated from Mundakayam, which was introduced by Mr. J.J.Murphy around 1910. An All India Agricultural & Industrial Exhibition was held here in 1967 which was inaugurated by Hindi film maestro Sunil Dutt. Malayala Manorama Daily once listed Mundakayam as the place with the highest cost of living in India. It is still included in the list of places whose consumer price indices are published by the Indian government Union Labour Ministry at regular intervals.[1]
