Uzhavoor

Uzhavoor is a small village in Kottayam district, Kerala in India. Most of its residents are either farmers or engaged in small-scale business. The tenth President of India, K. R. Narayanan, was born and grew up in this village.

Overview

Uzhavoor is located about 6 km from Kudakkachira, 7 km from Kurichithanam, 6 km from Monipilly, and 7 km from Kurianad and 15 km from Palai. Uzhavoor is also home to St.Stephen's College, The Capuchin Monastery. Uzhavoor Belongs to Palai constituency and was the home turf of K M Mani for the last 40 years. There are two movie theaters there. The people of this village are friendly and hospitable.

The majority of the population belongs to Knanaya Catholic community. St. Stephen's Church in Uzhavoor is famous for its perunnal (feast) on December 26th. This is the biggest event in the village and a lot of people take part in this event. St Stephen's College and O.L.L.H.S are lacated near to church.

The scenic beauty of the area is quite noteworthy. Uzhavoor is surrounded by small, but beautiful places like Edakkoli, Poovathumkal, Melareekara and Pius Mount. A place called "aanakkallumala" meaning "Mountain shaped like an elephant" is site with a fabulous view. Karunechi and Chathakulam temples are the main Hindu temples in Uzhavoor.

The simple peasants of this village who belong to different religions and communities live here in peace, harmony and unity. They are famous for their hard work and their efforts to be excellent in all fields. Mr. K. R. Narayanan who came from one of the poorest families of this village, is the role model for these people even today.

This village has a high school, primary school and higher secondary school, which are managed by the St.Stephen's forane church.
