census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County,California ,United States . The population was 11,523 at the 2000 census. It is located 17 miles east ofPalmdale 's Civic Center.The eponymous lake is mostly dry today. It was artificially filled as an enticement to landbuyers during the 1960s land speculation boom in the
Antelope Valley , but was allowed to evaporate when the initial developers sold their interests. There are efforts to get the lake filled again but the main obstacle has been funding.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 11,523 people, 3,137 households, and 2,613 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 342.0/km² (885.7/mi²). There were 3,453 housing units at an average density of 102.5/km² (265.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 61.01% White, 12.11% African American, 1.49% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 18.73% from other races, and 5.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.58% of the population.There were 3,137 households out of which 52.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.7% were non-families. 11.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.66 and the average family size was 3.92.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 39.9% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $38,794, and the median income for a family was $37,533. Males had a median income of $36,737 versus $24,917 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $12,209. About 19.7% of families and 23.1% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 31.5% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.Politics
