Location of Louisiana in the United StatesMathews is a census-designated place (CDP) on Bayou Lafourche in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,003 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houma–Bayou Cane–Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
Mathews is located at 29°41′2″N 90°33′2″W / 29.68389°N 90.55056°W (29.683825, -90.550470)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10.3 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,003 people, 726 households, and 569 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 506.1 people per square mile (195.3/km²). There were 747 housing units at an average density of 188.8 per square mile (72.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.56% White, 1.50% African American, 0.85% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 726 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $40,977, and the median income for a family was $41,683. Males had a median income of $35,958 versus $20,574 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,336. About 6.3% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 15.1% of those age 65 or over.
