Autoignition=Trioxsalen (trimethylpsoralen, trioxysalen or trisoralen) is a
furanocoumarin and apsoralen derivative. It is obtained from several plants, mainly "Psoralea corylifolia". Like other psoralens it causesphotosensitization of the skin. It is administered eithertopical ly ororal ly in conjunction withUV-A (the least damaging form ofultraviolet light) forphototherapy treatment ofvitiligo [cite web|url=http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/summary/summary.cgi?cid=5585|title=PubChem CID 5585] and handeczema . [PMID 15611423] Afterphotoactivation it creates interstrand cross-links in DNA, which can causeprogrammed cell death unless repaired by cellular mechanisms. In research it can be conjugated to dyes forconfocal microscopy and used to visualize sites of DNA damage. [PMID 17373769] The compound is also being explored for development ofantisense oligonucleotide s that can be cross-linked specifically to a mutantmRNA sequence without affecting normal transcripts differing at even a single base pair.
