According to the
United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 21.7square mile s (56.1km² ), of which, 21.6 square miles (55.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.32%) is water. The place name, Granite Bay, is derived from a bay inFolsom Lake on the east side of the town. The entire town is underlain bygranodiorite of the Penryn Pluton ofCretaceous age, hence the geological basis for the place name.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 19,388 people, 6,474 households, and 5,587 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 898.2 people per square mile (346.9/km²). There were 6,626 housing units at an average density of 307.0/sq mi (118.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.40% White, 0.68% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 3.53% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. 4.69% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 6,474 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 77.0% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.7% were non-families. 10.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $98,762, and the median income for a family was $103,151. Males had a median income of $81,049 versus $50,237 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $46,140. About 1.5% of families and 2.1% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 1.9% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.Granite Bay is home to three equestrian centers and several dozen horse stables. Because of the extensive horse trails along the shore of

Granite Bay is served by two public high schools,
Granite Bay High School andDel Oro High School (which is located in Loomis). Both high schools consistently rank among the top high schools in the State. The Eureka Union School District is the K-8 district serves Granite Bay and feeds into Granite Bay High School. It is also one of the state's highest performing districts according toStandardized Testing and Reporting . This is one of the few California school districts with its own parent sponsored educational foundations.The quality of schools in Granite Bay is often cited as an important factor in the area's high home values.
