Personal history

Noh Hong-cheol studied mechanical engineering at the Hongik University. After finishing two years in the Korean military service, he created his online fashion malls, Nohongchul.com and Dream and Adventurous Hongchul-Land Corporation, to sell a wide range of party supplies. He had another business (called Hongchul Tour) which provided reasonable-cost trip service to China.[1]

Career

Noh Hong-cheol's television debut came on M-net in early 2004 when he hosted his own popular cable TV show called "Dr. No's pleasure street" (닥터 노의 KIN길거리)[1] After the huge success of this show, he officially entered into the free-to-air network program Come to play (놀러와) on MBC, as a joint panelist. Since April 2005, he has been participating as a founding member of Korea's top comedy program, Muhan Dojeon.

He has sponsored a car commercial for Matiz of GM Daewoo; some caricatures and photos of himself were inserted in bonnet and doors of his red Matiz car (called 'Hongcar'홍카) in the advertisement.[2]

On August 17, 2007, he co-hosted a regional live TV broadcast, Today Jeonbuk(투데이 전북) of KBS Jeonju, accidentally, as a part of schedule of filming the adventurous journey of 2 days, 1 night. During the broadcast, he presented himself calmly and normally-just as a professional journalist. The Korean audience was shocked and this incident became a huge sensation, especially to the group of beloved viewers of Muhan Dojeon who know what his original character('Dol+I') was like. He said, "It was a nervous moment that my very-first challenge to appear a whole live broadcast, and now I'm worried about my mistakes a lot."[3]

Characters on Muhan Dojeon

On Muhan Dojeon he is characterized by a truly fast speed of speech. For this reason, his nickname on the programme was "Quickmouth". However, during the episode of Season 3 Episode 22, (Muhan News Hangawi Special), Host-in-chief Yu Jae-seok suggested that he change his nickname to the "Stone-Kid" star (Korean: Dol+I '돌+아이' which is a play on words in Korean, putting stone and child separate as when you put them together, means crazy which is 'unsuitable' for public broadcast) due to his rising popularity (especially with the teenage girls that he strongly supports) as an 'Teen idol'. This popularity is based on his ridiculous performances on this programme. During 2008 episodes of Muhan Dojeon (Infinite Challenge), he gained a new nickname, 뉴뚱, which means he is the "New Pig". He is often considered part of the 뚱보's. This consists of Jeong Joon-Ha (뚱뚱보) and Jung Hyung-Don (뚱보). He has a pot-belly which prompts the other cast members to call him this nickname. His body fat was shown excessively on the second part of the 100th episode of Muhan Dojeon (Episode 101).

Recently (Season 3 Episode 62), Noh made a song called "So-nyeo" (Hangul: 소녀, meaning "Girl"), proposed as a to tribute his fans.

On January 1, 2010, Gil Seong-jun(Gil), Jeong Hyeong-don, and Noh started their improper, voluntary and unscripted challenge for Muhan Dojeon for a duration of 3 months, which ended on April 1. According to their rule, the persons who did not meet the goal should shave his head. In this manner, Gil, who was already bald and to lose 20 kg of his weight, would have had to shave his eyebrows. After 3 months, on April 1 at the MBC's Dream Centre in Ilsan, Gil and Hyeong-don (who was challenged not to drink Carbonated drinks and to lose 10 kg of his weight) successfully finished their mission, however, only Hong-cheol, who was challenged to make his abs without having chocolate, failed the mission, and thus shaved his head immediately after the judgment.[4]

First aired on July 6th 2011, Noh Hong Chul and his costars on the show started a series of episodes dedicated to a competition-style concert on the Seohaean Expressway. As has been the norm for Muhan Dojeon when preparing for a concert, each costar was paired off with a guest musician or guest band. For the 2011 concert, Noh Hong Chul collaborated with Psy, a popular hip-hop singer, who is known for his antics on stage during his concerts. Together, they sang and performed the hit song “Shake It” under the band name “ChulSSa”.[5]
