As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 5,447 people, 2,155 households, and 1,579 families residing in the community. Thepopulation density was 2,374.2 people per square mile (918.4/km²). There were 2,210 housing units at an average density of 963.3/sq mi (372.6/km²). The racial makeup of the community was 94.57% White, 3.56% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 2,155 households out of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the community the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.
The median income for a household in the community was $50,691, and the median income for a family was $54,301. Males had a median income of $39,680 versus $29,093 for females. The
per capita income for the community was $22,840. About 2.5% of families and 4.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 5.6% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.References
