The organization's federal services practices also holds federal contracts, and divisions of the company run programs in the United Kingdom,[2] Israel,[3] Australia,[4] and Canada.[5] The company is based in Reston, Virginia and as of 2010 had over 7,500 employees[6] located in over 260 offices. MAXIMUS is the nation’s largest private provider with a primary focus on health and human services programs. In 2008, the company had sales of nearly $1 billion.[7]

History
MAXIMUS was founded by David Mastran, a Vietnam veteran and former government worker, in 1975 and was first incorporated as a privately held company in 1975. Mastran founded the company from his garage in McLean, Virginia.[8] The company eventually went public on June 13, 1997.[9]
Health and human services focus
In recent years, the company has focused on health and human services, divesting many of its business lines not related to these industries.[10] On April 30 of 2008, the organization sold its Security Solutions division. On September 30, 2008, the Company sold its Justice Solutions, Education Systems, and Asset Solutions divisions.[11]
Human services
MAXIMUS operates a variety of human services programs, which fall into four primary service areas—employment, child support enforcement, child care, and child welfare.
Employment services
MAXIMUS began providing welfare-to-work services in 1988 with Los Angeles County’s decision to award the first welfare-to-work privatization contract in the nation. Today[when?] MAXIMUS operates TANF programs in Los Angeles County; Alaska; San Diego; Orange County, California; Wisconsin; Maricopa County, Arizona; Nashville, Tennessee; and Cleveland, Ohio.
The company also runs One Stop Employment Centers, Veterans Employment Programs, and WIA Summer Youth Programs.[12]

May 1999- BusinessWeek article unionized employees complained that companies like MAXIMUS "work their employees harder and pay them less."[13]
2005- MAXIMUS came under fire when the Chicago Sun Time reported possible links between campaign donations made to former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich made by MAXIMUS and company lobbyists.[14]
July 2007- MAXIMUS settled a lawsuit brought against it by the United States government for involvement in falsifying Medicaid claims for $30.5 million, to avoid being found guilty.[15] MAXIMUS continues to be under a Corporate Integrity Agreement with the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services.
November 2007- State of Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today sued MAXIMUS, Inc. for breach of contract after it failed to provide the state with a functioning computer system used to access criminal justice information and conduct immediate criminal background checks.[16]
Maximus was involved in the persecution of Anthony Laine Ph.D. Employees of the company created documentation of fictitious children, on the basis of which Maximus pursued fraudulent child support claims against Laine.[17]
October 2010- The State of Massachusetts extended their contract with MAXIMUS causing 40 people to lose their jobs at a subsidiary of The University of Massachusetts Medical School. [18]
2010- According to the Los Angeles Times, when MAXIMUS faced the risk of losing a $32 million welfare-to-work contract with Los Angeles County in 2010, the company reacted by outspending its competitor on lobbying efforts by eight to one. But after MAXIMUS spent $200,000 in lobbying fees and thousands more in campaign contributions, the paper explains, Los Angeles‘s five county supervisors voted to ignore the year-long review process and re-bid the contract to give MAXIMUS another chance.[19]
June 2011- Boston based Fox 25 news uncovered a wanted fugitive by the name of Maureen Simonetti had been working for the company as a manager on the MassHealth (Massachusetts Medicaid) project. According to Fox 25 News this manager had access to the personal information, including Social Security Numbers for more than one million Massachusetts residents as well as access to doctors social security numbers and financial information. The company later admitted that she had revealed her criminal past to MAXIMUS before being hired. [20]
September 2011- MAXIMUS INC. was sued by EEOC for disability discrimination. Maximus, Inc. allegedly violated federal law when it refused to promote a female employee because it regarded her as disabled, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed. [21]
