The Province of Mantua (Italian: Provincia di Mantova) is a province in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Its capital is the city of Mantua.

Features

Mantua is surrounded on three sides by lakes. It has three central piazzas, including the famous Piazza Mantegna. Mantua is home to the Gonzaga family's mansion. A relic of Christ's Blood is buried in the local Basilica di Sant'Andrea. The Blood of Christ militia originated in Mantua because of this relic.

  • Virgil was born near Mantua, in Cisalpine Gaul.
  • The painter Andrea Mantegna is buried in the Basilica di Sant'Andrea.
  • Salamone Rossi Hebreo, the first composer to set Jewish liturgy to choral music as well as a prolific composer of vocal and instrumental music, was born in Mantua and lived most of his life there.
